The great teacher Yun-men said, “When illumination does not penetrate to liberation, there are two kinds of sickness.
“One is when it is not clear everywhere, and there is something before you.
“When you have managed to penetrate the emptiness of all phenomena, yet there subtly seems to be something there, this too is failure of illumination to penetrate to liberation.
“The absolute, furthermore, also has two kinds of sickness. One is when you have reached the absolute but your personal view is still there because you haven’t let go of absolutist fixation, and so you become trapped in the realm of absolutism.
“Even if you pass through, it will not do if you let mistakes go; keep examining to see if there is any breath there, for this too is a sickness.”
